Martin is a Chartered Fire Consultant and a Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers. He has over twenty-five years experience in fire safety engineering including UK & Europe, USA, Asia and the Middle East. His experience spans a variety of large and prestigious landmark projects, including some of the tallest buildings in the world, providing expert advice from concept to final design. Martin has also significantly contributed to the development of performance based design solutions. Martin has contributed to key fire design guides and is widely published at technical conferences and in technical journals for tall building design
Author of the Fire and Life Safety sections for the new Arid Guide and Tropical Guide.
IFE representative and fire advisor for the Institute of Structural Engineers working group dealing with the design implications of tall buildings following 9/11. Published in 2002
Lead author of the first version of BS9999 Means of Escape Section for British Standards Institution.
Responsible for updating the guidance on Fire Safety for Construction Sites for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors isurv construction an on-line standards and guidance portal.
We use a range of fire models to design smoke management systems including the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis for
the following buildings
• Large Shopping malls and atria
• Airport concourses and Stadia
• Parking structures
We use zone models for more simple geometries following the guidance from CIBSE Guide E Fire Safety Engineering to enable smoke extract fans to be sized and smoke curtains to be located.
CFD may be used as a value engineering exercise.
Egress planning and modelling using advanced 3D visualization models allows us to safely allow extended travel distances or extended egress times for:
• Stadia
• Tall buildings
• Airports and transport interchanges
We also advise on cold smoke testing using theatrical smoke to verify the correct operation and sequencing of smoke management systems.
This type of testing is a requirement of the larger hotel operator brand standards including Marriott International.
Working closely with the project structural engineering we provide specialist advice to the design team to add value to the project as follows:
• Timber structures
• Steel structures
• Design of structures for extreme events
